How Much Birch Oil Per Candle? A Cost-Per-Pour Breakdown

A candle that holds 8 oz of wax and carries 0.5% birch oil by weight uses 0.04 oz of oil. At the 1 oz bottle price that is $0.64 of oil per candle, and at the 16 oz price it is $0.20. This page shows the arithmetic behind those figures for every size we sell, the loads published by wax suppliers, and the point where a bigger bottle stops saving money.

All prices below are our prices as of October 20, 2026, and they change, so check the shop page for current prices before you budget. We are not a candle maker and have poured no test candles. Everything here is arithmetic on our price list and on loads that other people published, and each assumption is stated where it is used.

The formula, and the one assumption that moves the answer

Cost of oil per candle = wax weight x fragrance load x (price per ounce of oil). The load is a percentage of wax weight, which is how the suppliers we cite state it. Wax and oil are both weighed, not measured by volume.

The one assumption is what "oz" means on our size labels. We have not been told whether the 1 oz, 2 oz and other retail sizes are weight ounces or fluid ounces, so this page treats them as weight ounces and 1 lb as 16 oz. If they were fluid ounces, the density on our own published certificate of analysis (1.183, relative to water at 20 C) changes the result. One fluid ounce is 29.5735 mL, so it would weigh 29.5735 x 1.183 = 34.99 g, which is 34.99 / 28.3495 = 1.234 weight ounces. Every per-ounce price below would then fall by a factor of 1.234, about 19%. For example the 16 oz bottle would be $79.99 / 1.234 = $64.82 per weight pound instead of $79.99. Step 1: price per ounce and per pound

Per-ounce and per-pound cost by size (prices as of October 20, 2026)

400 lb$11,248.996,40011,248.99 / 6,400$1.76$28.12

The retail range runs from $15.99 per ounce at 1 oz to $5.00 at 16 oz, a drop of 68.7%. The bulk sizes continue the slope: $3.52 per ounce at 5 lb, $2.78 at 25 lb and $1.76 at 400 lb. Discount codes, such as an email-signup offer, are not counted anywhere on this page.

Step 2: choose the load, and see why the table has four columns

The loads in the next table come from three published sources, plus one of our own. A candle-supplier lab note on a paraffin pillar wax gave a recommended load of 3% (about 0.5 oz of fragrance per pound of wax) (Candle Science, IGI 1239 lab note). The same supplier's wick guide tells makers to wick up for loads above 1 oz of fragrance per pound of wax, which is 1/16 or 6.25%, so "about 6%" is the point where their guidance changes (Candle Science, wick guide). A soy container wax data sheet from a UK supplier states that its wax may be used with fragrance "up to 10-12%" (soy wax container technical data sheet v5.0, 2020). We use 10%, the low end of that range.

Those are total fragrance loads, not birch loads. Read the 3%, 6% and 10% columns as the cost if birch were the entire fragrance, which is a budget ceiling and not a recipe we recommend. Birch oil is more than 93% methyl salicylate (Dosoky, Poudel and Satyal, 2022, a survey by researchers at a competing oil company, put authentic samples at 93.24-99.84%), and the research behind this page located no IFRA Standard or candle standard that sets a limit for it, so in our own recipe pages we hold birch to 0.5% of wax weight or less and let other fragrance make up the rest of the load (see the root beer candle starting formula). The 0.5% column is that realistic case.

Step 3: cost of oil per candle, by bottle size

Birch oil cost in one candle holding 8 oz of wax (8 oz of wax by weight = 226.8 g), by bottle size and load
SizePer ounce0.5% load (0.04 oz of oil)3% load (0.24 oz of oil)6% load (0.48 oz of oil)10% load (0.80 oz of oil)
1 oz$15.99$0.64$3.84$7.68$12.79
2 oz$10.99$0.44$2.64$5.28$8.80
4 oz$8.75$0.35$2.10$4.20$7.00
8 oz$6.37$0.25$1.53$3.06$5.10
16 oz$5.00$0.20$1.20$2.40$4.00
5 lb$3.52$0.14$0.85$1.69$2.82
25 lb$2.78$0.11$0.67$1.33$2.22
400 lb$1.76$0.07$0.42$0.84$1.41

Worked example, 16 oz bottle at a 3% load: 8 oz of wax x 0.03 = 0.24 oz of oil; $5.00 per ounce x 0.24 = $1.20. Worked example, 1 oz bottle at 0.5%: 8 oz x 0.005 = 0.04 oz; $15.99 x 0.04 = $0.64. For a 16 oz (1 lb) candle, double every figure. For a different wax weight, scale in proportion.

The table shows two things at once. At the loads in the 6% and 10% columns, a 1 oz bottle is finished by one or two candles (1 / 0.48 = 2.1 at 6%, 1 / 0.8 = 1.25 at 10%), so buying by the single ounce is only a sampling decision. And at 0.5%, the difference between the smallest and largest retail bottle is $0.44 per candle, which is small next to the cost of the jar, wax, wick and label.

When bulk pays off: the break-even table

A larger bottle only saves money if you use enough of it before the oil ages out. Our product page gives a typical shelf life of 2 to 3 years for tightly capped, cool, dark storage. The break-even for a step up is the larger price divided by the smaller size's per-ounce price: that is how many ounces you must use for the larger size to cost the same per used ounce.

Break-even: how much of the bigger size you must actually use for it to beat the next size down
Step upCalculation (bigger price / smaller per-ounce price)Ounces to useShare of the bigger sizeCandles at 0.04 oz each

Read the last column against your real pour schedule. At 0.5% on 8 oz candles, a 16 oz bottle covers 400 candles and a 5 lb pail covers 2,000. Spread over two years that is 2,000 / 730 = 2.7 candles a day. If you pour fewer than about 1,410 candles' worth in the shelf life, the 5 lb size has cost you more per used ounce than the 16 oz bottle would have. Buy bulk when your pour schedule clearly exceeds the break-even; buy retail when it does not.

The saving when you do use it all: five 16 oz bottles cost 5 x $79.99 = $399.95 for 80 oz, against $281.99 for one 5 lb container, a difference of $117.96. Sixteen 25 lb containers would cost 16 x $1,111.99 = $17,791.84 against $11,248.99 for one 400 lb size, a difference of $6,542.85. For bulk handling questions, see our bulk buying guide, and write to us for quantities above 400 lb.

Pricing your candles

Do not price off the oil. Add every cost of one candle: wax, jar, wick, label, packaging and oil. Call that total C. To reach a gross margin m (for instance 0.5 for 50%), price = C / (1 - m). Oil is the only line this page can fill in for you.

Illustration, not a market claim: with m = 0.5 the price is 2C, so moving from the 1 oz bottle ($0.64 of oil at 0.5%) to the 16 oz bottle ($0.20) lowers the shelf price needed by 2 x $0.44 = $0.88. At a 3% load the same move lowers the oil line from $3.84 to $1.20, so the shelf price needed falls by 2 x $2.64 = $5.28. We have no data on what candles sell for, what makers earn or how many candles they pour, so we cannot tell you whether a given candle line is profitable.

Questions makers ask

How much birch oil goes in one candle?

It depends on the wax weight and the share of the fragrance load that is birch. At 0.5% of an 8 oz candle's wax weight, the oil is 0.04 oz, about 1.13 g. At a 6% total load, the whole fragrance is 0.48 oz, but birch should be only part of it, because we cap birch at 0.5% in our recipes.

Is essential oil candle making profitable?

We cannot say. Profit depends on your other costs, price, volume and time, and we have no sales data to share. What the arithmetic shows is that at a 0.5% birch load the oil costs $0.20 to $0.64 per 8 oz candle at retail sizes, so birch is rarely the line that decides a margin.

When should I buy in bulk?

Buy a larger size when you will use at least the break-even share of it within the 2 to 3 year typical shelf life. For 5 lb against 16 oz bottles, that is 56.4 oz of the 80 oz. Below that, the smaller size costs less per ounce you actually use.

Do the prices on this page stay current?

No. These prices are as of October 20, 2026. Prices change, so check the shop page and recompute with the formula above.

Plan the first pour with your own wax data sheet, test one jar of each load, and recompute this table when the price list changes. For the technical side of loads and flash point, read the candle makers' FAQ, the candle making guide, and the holiday line planning guide.
